Today, I had the pleasure of tasting Rollright, a semi-soft washed rind cheese from Manor Farm in Gloucestershire, crafted by David Jarrett. This cow’s milk cheese, wrapped in a spruce band, offers a buttery flavour that reflects the rich and diverse clover pastures of Chedworth Manor Farm. It’s inspired by classic French cheeses and has earned accolades such as the Supreme Champion at the Artisan Cheese Awards 2016 and Best Soft Cheese at the Cheese Awards 2016.
Appearance
Rollright presents itself in a circular shape, similar to Camembert, with a rustic bronze hue on top and a dark brown leathery spruce band around the side. Upon cutting, it reveals a soft, creamy interior with a golden hue. The cheese begins to melt at room temperature, showcasing its semi-soft texture.
Score: 8/10
Aroma
The aroma of Rollright is a delightful blend of fruity, musty notes with hints of mushrooms and forest moss. Initially, you need to get quite close to it to detect the smell, but as it warms, the aroma becomes more pronounced and pungent.
Score: 7/10
Texture
The texture of Rollright is wonderfully creamy, almost runny, with a medium firmness in the rind. The interior is soft and seems to melt in your hand, making it essential to serve fresh if you want to keep it solid.
Score: 9/10
Flavour
The flavour of Rollright is light and fresh, with a rich creaminess and subtle Alpine grassy notes. The rind, influenced by the spruce band, adds a woody, Alpine flavour that complements the creamy interior. The cheese is elegant with a delicate balance of creaminess and earthiness, though it lacks a strong aftertaste.
Score: 17/20
Pairing Potential
Rollright pairs well with cornichons, which cut through its creaminess, while almonds add a subtle sweetness that complements the cheese. However, nuts didn’t seem to enhance the flavour significantly. This cheese would pair nicely with a light, crisp wine to balance its rich, creamy profile.
Score: 7/10
Overall Enjoyment
Rollright is an elegant cheese with a refined flavour, suitable for those who appreciate more sophisticated cheeses beyond the standard supermarket varieties. It’s a great addition to any cheese board, offering a touch of complexity without being overwhelming. Whether you’re a cheese enthusiast or just looking to expand your palate, Rollright is a delightful choice that showcases the best of artisanal cheesemaking.
Score: 17/20
Final Score: 65/80
Rollright is a cheese that makes a statement with its elegant flavour, dynamic texture, and refined aroma. It’s an excellent choice for any cheese lover looking for a sophisticated and enjoyable cheese experience.
